Program description:

This program is collaboration between Kenya Medical Research Institute and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention whose remit is to conduct research in malaria, HIV and other diseases.

Due to its continued growth, the Refugee Health Program of the International Emerging Infectious Diseases Program (IEIP) of the Global Disease Detection Division has the following vacancy.

Position: Medical Officer (MR 10)
Job Group: N
Location: Dadaab Refugee Camps, Northeastern Province

Essential Requirements
  • Degree in Clinical Medicine (M.D or MB. ChB or equivalent )
  • Proficiency in oral and written English and Swahili languages, fluency in Somali an added advantage.
  • Minimum of 6 months Clinical experience
  • Experience working in a refugee camp or with refugees is an added advantage
  • Experience working on out break response is an advantage
Desired Qualifications
  • Fluency in Somali
  • Basic Computer skills
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Coordinate activities related to population-based surveillance for fever and respiratory infections.
  • Manage all logistics associated with getting study up and running.
  • Supervise the evaluation of potential patients for inclusion in studies according to study protocol.
  • Supervise study team – including clinical, lab, and data staff.
  • Oversee the clinical diagnosis and management of surveillance participants with study conditions.
  • Supervise administration of questionnaires to surveillance participants.
  • Oversee the collection of specimens according to laboratory SOPs.
  • Maintain complete and accurate records using developed data collection instruments; report back to staff in Nairobi and Atlanta
  • Other duties as assigned.
Terms of Employment:

A six one year renewable contract as per KEMRI scheme of service.

Probation period for the first 3 months.

Remuneration: Compensation is negotiable within a relevant grade, based on education levels, relevant experience and demonstrated competency.

The salary scheme is based on the KEMRI scales plus supplemental amounts.
