Project Officer, Building a Network of Peace: Bridging Peace Messages in Kibera, Nairobi
CARE International in Kenya is seeking to recruit a suitably qualified candidate for the position of Project Officer, for a new peace building project – Building a Network of Peace: Bridging Peace Messages in Kibera, Nairobi. This project has been designed to respond to the effect of the Post Election Violence and it is aimed at restoring peace and co-existence amongst communities affected by the Post Election Violence in Kibera. The objectives include establishing or strengthening a network of grassroots organizations involved in peace building activities and disseminating and promoting peace messages and conflict resolution approaches, which incorporate the needs of marginalized groups such as women, and youth within the targeted location.
Job Summary
Reporting to the Project Manager, the Project Officer will be the community point person and will coordinate the process of community mobilization and identification of grassroots organizations to work with in the project, promote linkages with other stakeholders involved in peace building initiatives, and coordinate the process of community capacity building for peace building in terms of training, peace messages development and dissemination, and monitoring related activities. The job holder is also expected to create synergies with other CARE Projects being implemented in the Kibera community.
Key Responsibilities and Tasks
- In consultation with the Project Manager develop a project implementation plan as well as a monitoring and evaluation plan.
- Facilitate a stakeholder analysis process in the target community leading to the identification of suitable grassroots organizations for involvement in the project.
- Facilitate the process of conflict analysis in the target area to identify the issues that contribute to conflict and bring out issues that need to be included in managing the conflict.
- Help in building alliances for managing the conflict through locally based peace mechanisms.
- Coordinate and facilitate the process of peace messages development and activities related to the dissemination of the same.
- Facilitate all capacity building activities of the project
- Responsible for gathering of data that will contribute to producing both project technical and monitoring reports.
Required Qualifications and Competencies
- A Bachelor’s Degree in Social Sciences (Community Development, Social Work, Sociology or Development Studies).
- Professional training in peace building and conflict resolution is desirable
- At least three years field experience in community development programming with a bias on peace building and conflict resolution.
- Experience in Project Planning and Coordination.
- Innovative, creative, a team player with good assessment and analytical skills.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, good inter personal relations.
- Must be culturally sensitive and embrace diversity.
