Telecommunications Officer Job Vacancy: UNON

Applications are hereby invited from suitably qualified candidates who are Kenyan Nationals to fill the above position in the Information and Communications Technology Service of UNON.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Wide Area Network: Install, Commission and maintain C band and KU band satellite earth stations to ensure connectivity of UNON to UNHQ, UNLB-Brindisi, and other ISP and voice / data gateway providers.

2. Telephony Systems: Install, Commission and maintain high capacity PABX units and systems. Ensure the annual availability of telephone lines. Install and Commission and manage IP telephony system. Monitor and control WAN and LAN voice gateways providers through GSM and Satellite systems and assist in existing systems to ensure compatibility to emerging technology of IP telephony.

3. Video Conference: Install and Commission VC terminals and devices. Draft plans and solutions to ensure availability of VC facilities. Propose plans and ways for cost effective VC connectivity through IP based platform and or ISDN dedicated lease lines.

4. Microwave and UHF Radio Systems: Install, Commission and maintain UHF and Microwave broad band terminals and systems. Prepare organizational needs assessment and propose cost effective solutions for voice and data communications.

5. VHF/HF Communication Systems: Install, commission and program VHF/HF terminals and system. Ensure that all UN agencies are facilitated with common radio terminals and frequencies.

Required qualifications: University Degree in telecommunications engineering or other related fields.

Experience: A minimum of 7 years of professional experience in telecommunications at the national level. Satellite and telephony communications, specializing in the WAN/satellite telecommunications infrastructure and PABX systems.

Knowledge of Microsoft NT, TCP/IP and other network protocols, design of LAN/WAN telecommunications equipment and systems.

Languages: English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.

For the post advertised, fluency in both oral and written English and Kiswahili is essential.

Working knowledge of other United Nations languages an asset.
