Digital Opportunity Trust (DOT) - Intern Support Manager

Digital Opportunity Trust (DOT) began operations in Kenya in 2005 and has been registered as a local non-profit organization since 2007, with head offices in Nairobi. DOT Kenya is part of an international network of DOT country programs that report to DOT global headquarters based in Ottawa, Canada (http://www.dotrust.org/).
DOT Kenya runs programming that focuses on the capacity development of youth Interns who will become ICT Leaders. These Interns work through Community Based Organizations and education institutions to build ICT and business skills capacity of vulnerable groups (women, youth, unemployed) in selected communities to increase their employment and income-generation opportunities.
DOT Kenya is a young, agile and rapidly growing organization with a proven track record and community of local partners. The next few years will be a period of both dynamic growth and institutional and program innovation.
To contribute to the management of this continuing growth, DOT Kenya is now seeking to hire an Intern Support Manager (ISM) to join its small but committed team in Nairobi.
The Position
Reporting to the Program Manager, the focus of the ISM will be to manage DOT Kenya Intern recruitment, Intern placement, Intern training, supervision and support, and monitoring and evaluation of Intern performance. The ISM will have overall responsibility of supporting Intern Support Assistants (ISAs) and their Intern teams in their work, coaching them at both a personal and professional level.
The position will be located in DOT Kenya’s offices in Nairobi, Kenya.
Responsibilities
  • Has a “one” on “one” relationship with each ISA and their Intern teams
  • Involved with interns from recruitment, through training, into the community and program exit
  • Coaches, guides and encourages ISA and Intern professional and personal development
  • Helps ISAs and Interns to achieve greater impact by providing coaching, ideas and advice on how interns can fulfill their internship responsibilities and tasks
  • Facilitates each of the components of the Intern training.
  • Online and face-to-face classroom training that takes place as an intensive experience at the beginning of the internship
  • Over course of the Internship to support learning in the field.
  • Engages and facilitates community network in each location:
  • Ensures community leaders/champions are engaged & satisfied
  • Ensures community members are happy/satisfied with program
  • Ensures access partners are engaged/satisfied with the interns
  • Drives and tracks progress of ISAs and their Interns against DOT community milestones
  • Ensures Interns complete regular reporting
  • Develops individual improvement plans
  • Delivers Intern performance assessments
  • Provides regular formal and informal program feedback to team
  • Functions as an ISA and Intern team manager:
  • Ensures that Interns are consistently fulfilling their roles, completing program delivery tasks and achieving milestones
  • Ensures that Interns have their stipends and the resources they need to be successful
  • Ensures that the interns are proactively using experience to create job opportunities for themselves post internship
  • Ensures that individual outstanding interns are recognized
  • Nominates best Interns for future ISA opportunities
Qualifications and Experience
  • Minimum undergraduate degree in Education/Business or related field
  • Formal HR management training
  • Mentoring and training teams of more than 20 people for a period of no less than 3 years
  • Experience training/facilitating learning with a participatory learner-centered approach.
  • Experience working in a not-for-profit environment with an awareness of the issues, challenges and opportunities involved

  • Have highest personal ethics. A person who demonstrates integrity and is a model of ethical values and behavior at all times.
Compensation
DOT Kenya is a non-profit organization that recognizes that change is driven by involving the best people. Salary will be commensurate with experience.
