SUMMARY OF POSITION
IREX seeks a Youth and Conflict Specialist for a potential two-year USAID-funded youth engagement and conflict mitigation program based in Nyanza Province, Kenya.  The program aims to build the capacity of youth-led community based organizations (CBOs) through training and support to promising youth leaders, the creation networks of cooperation within and between communities that bridge ethnic and socioeconomic divides.  The position is based in Kisumu, Kenya with travel throughout Kenya. The position is contingent on funding.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
-    Under the direction of the Program Director, support the technical implementation of the program, ensuring the quality of the program’s technical interventions and attention to international best practices in youth empowerment and conflict mitigation
-    Contribute to the implementation of the program’s training, technical assistance, grant-giving activities to ensure that the overall project is meeting proposed objectives and targets
-    Provide technical inputs into best practices in youth empowerment and conflict mitigation in Kenya
-    Ensure attention to gender and social exclusion issues in all aspects of the program’s work
-    Collaborate with IREX’s implementing partners to coordinate efforts and share program results
-    Support the Program Manager in managing the program including: planning and implementing program strategy

QUALIFICATIONS
Candidates must be well organized, able to work independently, skilled at handling multiple tasks, able to meet deadlines and work in stressful situations, and willing to travel within Kenya. Other specific qualifications should include at a minimum:
-          A bachelor’s degree or equivalent in related field
-          Five or more years of experience working on conflict mitigation and/or youth programming required
-          Excellent understanding of conflict triggers in Kenya required
-          Experience conducting trainings, and working with youth, government officials, CSOs
-          Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills, and the ability to communicate with local stakeholders to ensure the successful completion of project activities
-          Strong computer skills (Word, Excel, Internet required)
-          English language fluency required; Kiswahili and/or  local Kenyan languages desirable.
