SOUTH SUDAN - Programme Director
Based in Juba and to start in November 2010 for at least 2 years
We are seeking an experienced senior manager to lead and direct Tearfund’s Disaster Management Team (DMT) Programme in Southern Sudan. Do you have the skills, character and understanding to be able to take on the challenge of managing Tearfund’s operational work in this environment?
Overview of the South Sudan Programme
This is an interesting and challenging time to be working in Southern Sudan as hopes and challenges for the country are high and the future is inevitably uncertain. The programme targets remote and neglected areas affected by conflict and chronic vulnerability. Tearfund specializes in the areas of household food security, nutrition, community health education, water & sanitation and primary health care. The approach taken is one of developmental relief, with a strong emphasis on community participation, reducing the risk and impact of disasters and building the capacity of government structures.
The programme is finalising its review of strategy for the coming 2 years and the successful post holder will be primarily responsible for ensuring its successful implementation.
You will head the development, management and implementation of the programme in accordance with DMT’s policy and strategy for Sudan. In such a changing environment you will have responsibility for taking the lead on reviewing priorities, mission purpose, and strategic goals, in such a way that involves both communities and staff, ensuring that they understand any necessary changes. In addition, you will provide leadership to ensure the physical welfare, spiritual wellbeing and professional development of programme staff. Strong experience is required in relief management, including people management managing programme budgets, project cycle management; donor management (proposal development, reporting, and compliance).
This role is part of the Senior Management Team for the programme and will involve significant external representation of Tearfund.
Staff development and retention are increasingly important to Tearfund and so we are looking for strong leaders with proven organisational and people management skills but who can also demonstrate success in strategic management, ideally in the relief and development sector.
The successful applicant will be educated to degree level or have equivalent relevant qualifications; with a good understanding of current relief and development issues.
Excellent written and spoken English, good cross-cultural awareness and a genuine heart for the poor are essential for this role. Whilst the post is based in Juba, frequent travel to field sites in Southern Sudan will be required. All posts involve potential contact with children and the recruitment process will include specific checks related to child protection issues.
