Finance Assistant, Drylands Programme

Its mission is to influence, encourage and assist societies throughout the world to conserve the integrity and diversity of nature and to ensure that any use of natural resources is equitable and ecologically sustainable. Within the framework of global conventions IUCN has helped over 75 countries to prepare and implement national conservation and biodiversity strategies. IUCN has approximately 1,100 staff, most of whom are located in its regional and country offices while some 150 work at its Headquarters in Gland, Switzerland. Position: Finance Assistant, Drylands Programme
Reporting to: IUCN ESARO Projects Finance Officer, with functional reporting line to ESARO Regional Drylands Coordinator

Location: Nairobi, Kenya
Local Position

RESPONSIBILITIES
Accounting Compliance
Ensure that high quality financial data is entered into the SUN system or ERP in line with documented financial principles and IUCN requirements
Assist with daily recording of accounting data into the accounting system including capturing of all Drylands portfolio transactions from inter-company current accounts
Reporting
Assist with preparation of donor financial reports and related correspondence.
Ensure the integrity, accuracy and completeness of financial reports to internal and external users
Monitor and update key financial trends and performance indicators of individual projects under the Drylands portfolio
Treasury management
Monitor the liquidity situation under the Drylands projects portfolio with a view to maintain appropriate liquidity levels.
Coordinate cash flow planning ensuring availability of cash to meet maturing obligations.
Planning, Budgeting and Forecasting
Under the guidance of the ESARO Projects Finance Officer:
Monitor actual project implementation versus plan (budget) and actual income on a monthly basis.
Regularly review the financial status of income and expenditure of all projects under the Drylands portfolio against the agreed approved budgets.
Participate in due diligence process for clearing project agreements under the Drylands portfolio
Audit / Internal Control
Liaise with the ESARO Projects Finance Officer to organize and facilitate the smooth conduct of project specific audits under the Drylands Portfolio
Maintain adequate accounting, project and audit files for projects under the Drylands portfolio in line with IUCN requirements.

COMPETENCIES
First degree in Accounting, Finance or related field and professional qualification at CPA Part II/ACCA level II
At least 3 years relevant work experience in similar capacity with a recognized regional or international development agency
Working Knowledge of SUN system accounting and use of ERP is an added advantage
Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team and communicate in a cross-cultural environment.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English, and a working knowledge of Kiswahili and another AU/IUCN/Regional language would be an added advantage

Fully computer literate and familiar with Microsoft Office suit.
