Job description
As a member of the BRC’s Africa Team, the Representative will be based in Nairobi and will provide support to BRC’s Red Cross Movement (RCM) partners in the region. The Representative will assist national society partners to develop high quality programmes addressing the needs of vulnerable people.
S/he will be responsible for managing all BRC’s financial and technical inputs to national society partners’ long-term programmes, seeking to ensure their effective and transparent use. Although the post-holder will focus on support to national society partners’ long-term programmes, s/he will also assist BRC to manage its support to RCM humanitarian relief and recovery programmes.
The Representative will maintain frequent contact with others members of the Africa Team at the UK office to ensure effective coordination of support to programmes in the region. The post-holder will be supported by technical advisers from the BRC UK Office including Health Advisers and the Food Security and Livelihoods Adviser.
The Representative will be responsible for managing any local staff recruited by BRC in Nairobi and for supporting any BRC consultants deployed to the East Africa region.
Where BRC is involved in emergency response and recovery activities in the region the post-holder may be required to facilitate relations with the host national society. In these circumstances the post-holder will provide support and advice to the Disaster Management department regarding the capacity of the host national society.

There are several countries in the East Africa region where although BRC is not currently supporting partners’ long-term programmes, it seeks to maintain a dialogue with partners.

Experience:
- Experience in international development and aid which should include time spent overseas working at country and regional level.
- Understanding of the vulnerability issues and development trends particularly in an East African context.
- Experience of working with partners in developing countries.
Knowledge & Technical skills:
- Knowledge of good practice in capacity building and/or organisational development support to partner organisations
- Proven experience of delivering high quality programmes for vulnerable people
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
- Knowledge of development trends and key sectors (HIV, health and care, food security, disaster management).
- Ability to analyse and distil financial and narrative information
- Report writing skills to a variety of audiences.
