Job Description 
The National Museums of Kenya (NMK) is a multi-disciplinary state corporation whose core mandate is identification, preservation, conservation and development of Kenya’s rich and diverse heritage. This mandate is fulfilled through the work of several directorates key among which is the Directorate of Research and Collections (DRC). The position of Director Research and Collections (Western region) has now become vacant. We are seeking to recruit Kenyan national with strong administrative, organizational, leadership skills and extensive experience in research and heritage management to fill
this position.
Position and Functions
Reporting to the Director General, the Director Research and Collections is responsible for coordination of the national heritage collection, generation, documentation and dissemination of information through rigorous scientific activities and programmes focused on sustainable use, conservation and preservation of the heritage. These functions are carried out through five scientific departments namely; Zoological Sciences, Earth Sciences, Botanical Sciences, Centre for Bio-diversity and Cultural Heritage all supported by a common information resource centre.
Duties and Responsibilities:
  1. Formulate and implement policies and strategies for effective research programmes, collections management and capacity building programmes
  2. Spearhead grant seeking efforts and leverage of financial resources to support the directorate activities
  3. Promote partnership with national and international stakeholders such as the public, policy makers funding organizations, academic and research institutions, UN institutions and other
  4. Provide leadership and coordination in grant application process and the implementation of locally and internationally funded research projects
  5. Harmonize all research activities with NMK’s institutional mandate and research policy
  6. Organize forums for linking science and society through seminars, workshops, exhibitions and scientific conferences.
  7. Provide leadership and guidance to the heads of research departments and the resource centre
  8. Monitor and regularly evaluate performance of staff within the directorate
Requirement for Appointment
  1. Be in possession of a PhD in any of the five broad research fields relevant to NMK mandate (Zoology, Botany, Culture, Biodiversity or Earth Sciences)
  2. Have at least five (5) years post doctoral research experience in any of the five broad scientific fields mentioned above, three (3) of which must be at a senior management level.
  3. Have proven record of scientific leadership and achievement as demonstrated by high output of scholarly works (journal articles, books and book chapters) and not less than 10 articles in international peer-reviewed publications.
  4. Have a proven and impressive track record of successful grant-making as demonstrated by previous and/or current levels of research funding through individual or collaborative research projects.
  5. Have a proven record of administrative skills as demonstrated by previous positions held.
  6. Have strong communication skills and ability to engage effectively with both the academic, business and lay audiences who desire to participate in research ventures with the institution.
