Objectives
The Bank is an officially bilingual institution (English /French). The principal objectives of the Division of French Translation (CLSD.2) are:
  • Ensure quality translation of major Bank documents from English into French.
  • Analyze the flow of documents submitted to translation and decide on need for outsourcing.
  • Revise all documents meant for publication and bring them to the level of quality required.
  • Analyze and evaluate strategic choices and make relevant recommendations on the dissemination of the use of French within the Bank group.
  • Continually review and implement practical guidelines and procedures for the efficient delivery of language services.
Duties and responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Division Manager, CLSD.2, the incumbent shall assume the following duties:
Operational Functions:
  • Coordinate requests for translation into French from the other organizational units of the Bank.
  • Participates in strategic planning involving the Bank’s language services particularly as regards French translation.
  • Assess the length and difficulty of the texts submitted for translation.
  • Assess and, if necessary, renegotiate the deadlines with the requester.
  • Assign translation work according to the complexity of the documents and translators’ skills.
  • Determine the resource requirements and volume of work for assignment to freelance translators get the corresponding freelance contracts established and monitor the work.
  • Translate and, revise all types of Bank documents, in particular the most important and sensitive.
  • Ensure adherence to the deadlines in particular through the daily monitoring and update of the matrix of ongoing translations.
  • Submit weekly and monthly activity reports to the Division Manager.
  • Assist the Division Manager in evaluating the performance of in-house and free-lance translators.
Administrative Functions:
  • Assist in the pre-selection of candidates for permanent translator positions in the event of position vacancies.
  • Recruit free-lance translators.
  • Assist with the organization of the divisional meetings.
  • Assist the Division Manager in carrying out the administrative functions of the Division.
  • Act for the Division Manager by performing all management and supervision duties, such as participating in departmental meetings;
Selection Criteria
Including desirable skills, knowledge and experience
  • At least a Masters degree delivered by a recognized Translation school, or in Modern Languages with specialization in Translation;
  • Seven (7) years practical experience in translation (particularly in finance and/or law), at least 5 of which should have been spent working in or with an international organization (preferably in development banks);
  • Possess good pedagogical skills to coach revised translators and demonstrate sound interpersonal skills to interact with colleagues inside and outside the Bank;
  • Must be conversant with all the standard software used in the Bank, such as Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint; knowledge of Multi Trans and “Dragon” is preferable.
  • Possess an ability to work in and supervise a team; and
  • Perfect command of both English and French.
