Pharmaceutical Specialist Vacancy

An international NGO, implementing comprehensive HIV prevention, care and treatment programs to facilitate the Kenya Ministries of Medical Services and Public Health to control the spread of HIV and rapidly scale up HIV services with primary goal of supporting the scale-up of HIV prevention, care, and treatment activities, institute continuous quality improvement methods as well as the M&E infrastructure necessary to support these services, within designated health care facilities in Nairobi is seeking suitably qualified Kenyans able to fill the above position.

The Program Pharmaceutical Specialist will report to Pharmaceutical and Health Systems Technical Advisor

Purpose of Position

Under the supervision of the Pharmaceutical and Health Systems Technical Advisor, the responsibility of the incumbent will be to provide leadership in fulfilling the core function within the PACT grant of pharmaceutical management.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Assist in the coordination of the grant responsibility for supply chain management and procurement of supplies and pharmaceuticals for the PACT grant
  • Participate in the (raining of PACT supported Points of" Service on forecasting drug needs, procurement, tracking inventory, storage, dispensing, good pharmacy practice and monitoring of pharmaceuticals locally.
  • With support from the Pharmaceutical and Health Systems Technical Advisor provide guidance to ensure that POS procurement of drugs tor opportunistic infections and overall pharmaceutical management procedures follow respective Ministry of Health guidelines for drug management protocols and are compliant with all regulatory requirements.
  • Collect, synthesize and transmit data & information related to ARVs and other drugs utilization at assigned POS as an input into forecasting future needs to the Pharmaceutical and Health Systems Technical Advisor
  • In conjunction with the Pharmaceutical and Health Systems Technical Advisor, work to develop, strengthen and integrate ARVs procurement and supply system with POS overall pharmaceutical management systems.
Specific duties:

The incumbent would ideally be a highly competent self-starter who enjoys taking initiative.

Attributes would also include immense patience, tenacity and creative thinking.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of a plan for local management of ARVs and laboratory supply chain in Kenya as a member of the PACT Therapeutic Drug Committee.
  • Prepare regular reports for the Pharmaceutical and Health Systems Technical Advisor on the state of PACT operations in assigned POS.
  • Confirm the receipt of ARVs and drugs for Ols from the in-country warehousing agents at assigned POSs and enhance commodity tracking operations.
  • Contribute to quarterly and annual program reports en the PACT ART Initiative.
  • Contribute to the development of supply chain perspective by providing timely and adequate information and recommendations from assigned POS.
  • Ad as a resource for the PACT Kenya Program on all pharmaceutical issues.
  • With support from the Senior Health Supply Chain Specialist, develop the most efficient and cost-effective supply routes from manufacturers and suppliers of ARVs and Ol drugs to the POS.
  • Contribute to the maintenance of established systems and mechanisms in Kenya, for the acquisition and delivery of drugs for opportunistic infections that are most appropriate to the needs of the PACT Program and POS.
  • Work with POS to implement pharmacy related improvements and recommendations identified during assessments.
  • Participate in site assessment visits and POS training as required.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Hold a B.Pharm degree from a recognized university and valid/current practicing license.
  • Have a minimum of 3 years experience in providing technical and managerial services in drug inventory management
  • Must be experienced in hospital pharmacy operations and hospital inventory management operations
  • Have excellent facilitation skills with emphasis on adult learning techniques
  • Familiar with local logistical operations in the country such as distribution, inventory management and warehousing operations
  • Has demonstrable ability to provide training in rational use of medicines, inventory -management and issues relating to drug supply management Possesses excellent organizational, verbal and written communication skills
  • Have detail oriented work style and is able to work in a high paced environment
  • Be willing to travel extensively
