AfriNIC is the Internet Numbers Registry for Africa. AfriNIC is a non- governmental and not for profit organisation registered in Mauritius to provide Internet number resource management and some coordination services to the African Internet community.
General Functions:
We are looking to recruit an experienced Unix Systems and Network Administrator who is capable of research, design, development, testing, and documentation, whilst still being able to manage our LAN and WAN resources to maximum efficiency.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
- Install or supervise the installation, upgrading and maintenance of hardware, peripherals, and software to support AfriNIC’s mission.
- Work actively to maintain AfriNIC’s services to 99.999% uptime.
- Monitor systems’ performance, identifying problems and making corrections or recommendations to resolve problems and/or improve performance.
- Perform preventive maintenance as and when necessary.
- Maintain software to an up to date version to handle security holes and bugs as announced by vendors or users.
- Effective management of AfriNIC mailing lists.
- Manage user access to various internal and external systems.
- Establish, manage, and supervise backup storage processes, including full simulations to continually test and improve these.
- Establish, document and maintain best practice system and network security practices and policies. Monitor system security and provide reports on all security violations.
- Train and provide ongoing support to the rest of the Organisation in the proper operational procedures regarding backups, system security, and other related computing operations.
- Evaluate and make recommendations on new hardware and software products, based on assessment of system requirements. Perform preliminary tests and product evaluation to support recommendations.
- Recommend, design, construct, test, and implement application and systems programs as needed.
- Work to extend AfriNIC system availability through the design, and implementation of redundant and resilient services. • Establish project timelines with management for project milestones and completion dates.
- Periodically perform training as part of the AfriNIC training program.
- Perform troubleshooting for users to solve day-to-day operating problems.
Skills Required:
- 4-year university degree preferably in an information systems or computer science related discipline OR equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Proven track record of at least 4 years of job-related experience supporting both Linux and/or FreeBSD as a system administrator.
- Excellent knowledge of Internet Protocol (IP), network security issues and open source security tools.
- In-depth familiarity with common Internet protocols such as WHOIS, DNS, SMTP(S), POP(S), HTTP(S).
- Experience managing MySQL databases.
- Ability to understand complex instructions, and work independently, quickly and accurately.
- Ability to learn and fill knowledge gaps quickly.
- Knowledge of programming; able to write scripts to automate processes.
- Ability to travel to various locations to work on AfriNIC infrastructure and attend industry related conferences.
- Good interpersonal skills. Strong verbal and written skills.
Skills Preferred:
- Familiarity and/or experience with the RIR system, or previous relevant experience within an ISP environment.
- Experience with multiple site DNS Anycast.
- Experience with DNSSEC and PKI environments.
- Production experience with Open Source virtualisation tools.
- Experience using BGP and/or OSPF.
Additional Duties:
Perform other related duties as required and assigned.Physical Requirements:
Moderate physical activity with the ability to type and perform repetitive motions. Some lifting and stooping is required to unpack deliveries and stock office supplies.Abillity to spend most of the day looking at computer screens.
Ability to travel to various locations to perform AfriNIC related work, or attend industry related meetings on AfriNIC’s behalf.
