Biometrician

Summary:
The International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) with its Headquarters at Los Banos in the Philippines is a non-profit international agricultural research institute supported by Consultative Group of International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). The IRRI-Eastern and Southern Africa Regional Office (IRRI-ESARO) invites applicants for the mentioned position for its regional rice breeding office in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania.

The IRRI-ESARO is seeking a highly motivated and competent Biometrician, who will work under the IRRI-Regional Plant Breeders and Coordinator for ESA stationed at Dar-es-Salaam.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Assists ESA scientists in planning and design of the regional and national breeding nurseries, replicated yield trials (RYTs) for evaluation and selection. .

2. Coordinate with collaborators and researchers in the use of ICIS (International Crop Information System) and ensure data is collected in an agreed format and reporting.

3. Compile and analyze data and help interpret the results from a range of in-country and regional experiments which will include replicated trials and nurseries in the field, greenhouse/screen house or laboratory and surveys. .

4. Develop and conduct regional training programs in biometry for researchers and technicians from NARES.

5. Review scientific manuscripts for statistical correctness.

6. Develop and maintain the regional website as an inter-phase among researchers and collaborating partners to pool and share the information.

7. Develop and implement uniform bar-coding system for rice nurseries and trials in the region in accordance with IRRI bar-coding system for Africa.

8. Perform all other related duties that may be assigned from time to time by supervising IRS like to assist researchers, scholars, trainees and collaborators; attend to the visitors; and maintain data encoding related equipments etc.
JOB SPECIFICATIONS

Minimum education Experience required

MS degree in agricultural science, statistics or equivalent

Three years experience in biometrical approaches/application to plant sciences; Familiarity with biometrical and statistical softwares (SAS, SPSS, Cropstat, Genstat etc).

Proven record of working with plant scientists for the biometrical/ statistical support. Web-designing and maintaining

Excellent oral and written communication in English; must have good computer skills especially in spread sheets and graphics; must have supervisory skills and the ability to deal with collaborators; perform with minimum supervision.

Hard working and willing to work irregular hours when necessary and able to work in multi-cultural environment

Computers, Bar-coding system

Multicultural office setup, screen-houses, laboratory and experimental fields; collaborators' sites

Internationally Recruited Scientific staff, nationally recruited local staff, collaborators, farmers, scholars, contract workers and staff from other organization.
