Esso is a new parish, set up in 2006 by the Pallottine Fathers and its centre is the existing church, which is a wooden structure and which was built by the local people.
The parish is situated 1 km from the city centre of Arusha and is one of the fastest growing areas of the municipality. Estimates indicate the population is in the region of 35,000. Many inhabitants are recent migrants from various parts of northern Tanzania. These people have come to the city to find a better life for themselves and their families. The area is a slum and consists mostly of unplanned, high-density, low-income dwellings. Poverty and lack of services and infrastructure are major issues for the community.
