Research Scientist - Fisheries Management and Development
Duty Station: Honiara or Gizo Solomon Islands
Responsibilities
- Design and lead applied research projects in collaboration with national and regional partners that address change as it affects communities reliant upon small-scale fisheries
- Lead or provide technical inputs to components of multidisciplinary projects
- Develop and promote cross-disciplinary and participatory approaches for analyzing institutional, management and policy challenges relating to food security, ecology, and livelihoods
- Facilitate exchange of lessons and best practices through innovative approaches to communication
- Publish results of research in peer-reviewed scientific journals, policy briefings, and popular media and present research at international conferences
- Contribute to setting WorldFish research priorities in the region
- Conceptualize and develop proposals for future grant-funded research
Requirements:
- PhD in either a social science field (sociology, geography, anthropology, political science, natural resources economics, institutional economics, development etc.) OR an environmental science field (biology, ecology, fisheries science, etc.) with more than 8 years research experience
- Field experience addressing natural resources management, rural development, or fisheries & aquaculture challenges in developing countries
- Strong research skills, publishing and grant-funded research track record, ability to critically assess and synthesize existing research
- Proven project management, partner relations, and leadership skills; demonstrated ability to design and lead multi-partner research collaboration
- Ability to adapt and communicate effectively in a wide range of cultural settings and with different stakeholders
- Demonstrated experience with interdisciplinary approaches to natural resource management, with application to small-scale fisheries an advantage
- Excellent written and verbal English proficiency
- Physical fitness, readiness to travel
- Experience in Pacific Island countries, particularly Melanesia; proficiency in pidgin is an advantage
- Candidates who have recently completed their PhD or with fewer years postdoctoral experience may be considered at the Research Fellow level
