Background
The mandate of the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) is to provide coordination, leadership, operational support and oversight of the mine action in Somalia.

- Providing telecommunications services
- Providing telecommunications support and advice
- Keeping telecommunications Equipment Operational
- Receiving all incoming operations communications and directing them to the relevant persons
- Making all requested outgoing operations communications
- Transmitting/Receiving, as well as documenting and filing all project outgoing documents
- Recording all project incoming documents and routing these documents to relevant person
- Managing of operations communication files
- Supporting Users
- All other tasks assigned.
To ensure that the radio room is staffed 24 hours, the incumbent will perform the following principal functions in rotational basis:-
- Operate radio networks, telex/fax machines and receive and dispatch their messages;
- Type, distribute and log all incoming/outgoing radio/telex/fax messages properly to concerned UN personnel/Registry;
- Maintain chronological files for all incoming and outgoing telexes, facsimile and radio messages;
- Properly maintain all radio network, communication equipment;
- Perform maintenance and minor repairs on radio, telex/fax equipment;
- Maintain contact with UNMAS PM, Chief of Operations and UNMAS Security Officer, give details to UN Agencies of flight arrivals/departures;
- Ensure communication security at all times;
- Perform other related duties as required;
The duties performed by the Radio Operator have a direct impact on the security and safety of UN staff operating in the field and also the UN.

Academic qualifications and Experiences
- Minimum – Secondary Education, and preferable Computer literacy with user certificate;
- Minimum 2 years’ experience including experience in radio communications is desirable;
- Good knowledge of computer applications (MS Office, internet);
- Ability to plan, prioritize and initiative to solve problems;
- Experience as Radio Operator, Call agent or related field is desirable.
Language requirements
- Proficiency in English (both oral and written);
