The Aga Khan University - Faculty of Arts and Sciences Jobs in Kenya


Chartered in 1983, the Aga Khan University (AKU) is committed to excellence in education, research and service. The Faculty of Arts and Sciences in East Africa (FAS EA) will form the main component of the Principle Campus of the Aga Khan University in East Africa.

This new regional institution, situated in Arusha, Tanzania, aims for academic planning, design and construction for opening by 2015.

It will be by far the single largest investment of the Aga Khan Development Network in education in Africa to date. Planning is based in Nairobi, Kenya.

To this end, the FAS EA invites applications from appropriately qualified and competent individuals for the following Nairobi based positions:
Executive Officer

Reporting to the Head of Academic Planning (FAS EA), the Executive Officer will implement the strategic goals and objectives of the planning group.

S/he will contribute to, and provide leadership in, the implementation of the entity’s philosophy, mission, strategy, and its annual goals and objectives.
Key Responsibilities
  • Support the Head, Academic Planning, in collaborating and liaising with all relevant entities of the Aga Khan University and the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN);
  • Ensure the smooth transition from a start-up operation to a full-fledged institution;
  • Develop and streamline systems and procedures for the administration of FAS EA Academic Planning office, in close liaison with the FAS EA Facilities Planning office;
  • Establish and maintain processes for regular monitoring of financial & programmatic targets. This involves developing targets & budgets in liaison with the Academic Planning Team & the Finance department;
  • Liaise with the Human Resource Department to develop & implement the FAS, EA Human Resource Development Strategy;
  • Supervise the implementation of the Communications Strategy for Academic Planning;
  • Coordinate Resource Mobilisation, which includes tracking the progress of grants and monitoring staff in meeting deadlines. This also involves developing and assessing donor intelligence;
  • Oversee the overall management of the FAS office including procurement and operational activities.
Requirements
  • A Masters Degree; Ph.D. qualification is desirable;
  • At least ten (10) years of experience, five (5) of which must be in senior management positions;
  • Administrative experience in an academic setting will be an added advantage;
  • Proven record of professional integrity, vision-driven leadership, development and motivation of personnel;
  • Ability to network with a multiplicity of local and international stakeholders;
  • Excellent planning and organisational skills;

Intern

Reporting to the Head of Academic Planning (FAS EA) or designate, the Intern will be situated at the centre of a creative venture of a team of academics and intellectuals involved in the design of an innovative, interdisciplinary program of undergraduate study.
Key Responsibilities
  • Organise meetings and events on behalf of FAS;
  • Assist staff in the design, execution and evaluation of research projects, including literature reviews, surveys, focus groups, data integration and analysis;
  • Support the FAS work teams and consultants to solve a range of practical problems that normally face a start-up operation.
Requirements
  • Undergraduate degree in the Sciences or Humanities;
  • At least one (1) year of experience;
  • Enthusiastic and intellectual individuals, with a willingness to learn and excel;
