Save the Children UK - Area Manager

Save the Children UK is a leading international child rights organization, fighting to improve the lives of children in the UK and 50 countries around the world. Together with children, we are helping to build a better world for present and future generations by making a reality of children’s rights.

Save the Children UK in Kenya works in the North Eastern Province (Dadaab, Wajir and Mandera areas) with Programmes in Child Protection, Nutrition, Livelihoods and Health.

We are seeking a qualified candidate to fill the following position: Area Manager

Job Purpose

The Area Manager will efficiently and proactively manage operations of Save the Children UK Kenya Programme Area Office.

The Area Manager is responsible for supporting Save the Children UK Area office teams in achieving their work plans in an efficient and timely manner. This is a senior management position equivalent to 3.1 international scales and it reports to the Operations Director, Kenya Programme.

Key accountabilities:
  • Provide strategic direction and guidance to the Area office in all programming, operational and administrative support activities
  • Represent Save the Children UK Kenya Programme in the Field area, district and sub-district levels ensuring good relations are fostered and maintained with local communities, government authorities, district/provincial administration, NGO partners and other stakeholders. Attend monthly DSG and / or other equivalent meetings as required.
  • Directly lead, manage and motivate Area office staff whilst ensuring that all staff have clear work plans and performance objectives, and they receive regular supervision and reviews.
  • Work plans for programme staff will need to be developed jointly with the relevant programme managers.
  • Responsible for the Area office administrative function and ensures the delivery of quality office management & support services.
  • In close collaboration with the Finance Director /Grants Manager, ensure all budgets (donors and SC UK own resources) provided are managed in line with SC UK’s minimum standards and donor requirements.
  • Promote a team approach to management through regular team meetings to review and improve team integration, quality programme delivery, and support and service provision.
  • Ensure that information and support for promotion of program activities are clearly disseminated to program teams and, where necessary, beneficiaries.
  • Maintain appropriate systems to ensure communication protocols are followed by field teams and with other Save the Children UK offices.
  • Work in close collaboration with program partners at field & district level whilst ensuring that program operation procedures and systems are well communicated and implemented.
  • Ensure that Programme managers adhere strictly to donors’ and SC UK compliance requirements and in particular in relation to procurement, the management of assets secured though donor grants and in producing in a timely manner acceptable narrative and accurate financial reports.
  • Ensure that all new partners, suppliers and agents of any sort with whom SC UK engage have been properly vetted according to SC UK procedures and requirements.
  • Ensure the proper handling and maintenance of all Save the Children UK assets of the Area office and ascertain proper location of these assets.
  • Ensure strict adherence to current security management procedures and monitor the security situations in the area covered by the office. Liaise frequently with other security focal persons to monitor incidences and changing circumstances and report these to Operations Director and Safety and Security Manager.
  • Responsible for the safety, protection and maintenance of all SC UK assets in Area office ensuring that an up to date asset register is maintained.
Person Specification:

Essential
  • Preferably a Masters degree in project management, public/business administration, social sciences or other related fields with a minimum of 5 years experience in a senior management role with a leading NGO, INGO or Donor.
  • A thorough understanding of children rights and of child rights programming.
  • Experience of working collaboratively with local and national government, with NGO partners and a commitment to working through systems of community participation.
  • High levels of initiative coupled with diplomacy and tact; demonstrated capacity to work independently and meet deadlines.
  • Proven ability to develop and lead a high performing team.
  • Excellent written communications skills including proposal/report-writing and experience in external representation.
  • Commitment to and understanding of Save the Children’s vision, mission and values.
  • Finance management and strong budget management skills;
  • Proficiency in MS Office.
  • Willingness to work and live in a hardship area.
