Background

East African Portland Cement Company Ltd has been in cement manufacturing business for the last 77 years having installed its first grinding mill in Industrial Area Nairobi in 1933.

The Company is now located at Athi River and manufactures cement under the flagship brand name 'Blue Triangle' Cement.

Since the Company's inception, it has continued to support the growth of our Country's economy through sale of its cement which is not only used in various construction sectors within but also in the East African Region and beyond.

Vision: "To be the regional leader in the provision of cement, innovative cement products and solutions."

Mission: "To provide cement for infrastructural solutions to the satisfaction of our stakeholders."

The Company is now looking to fill the position of Managing Director as part of a re-organization programme that is aimed at achieving higher productivity, retaining a competitive edge and delivering superior quality product and services through application of best practices.

Below is a detailed description of the requirement for the position.

Managing Director

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Managing Director will be responsible for effective and efficient running of the Company in line with the guidelines, strategy, policies and controls agreed with the Board.

The Managing Director will manage and direct the organization towards its primary objectives based on profit and return on capital.

Specific responsibilities include:-
  • Spearheading the preparation of and proposal to the Board on Strategic guidelines, Business Plan and Budget and implementation of the agreed Board decisions.
  • Setting up the business cycle and ensuring that operations are being executed in accordance with the Company's policies and procedures approved by the Board of Directors.
  • Establishing the adequacy and soundness of financial, operational, commercial and human resources structures as well as ensuring that departments are staffed with qualified and competent staff in line with the orientations defined by the Board of Directors.
  • Reviewing operating results of the organization against established objectives and targets and taking remedial action on unsatisfactory results.
  • Planning, Coordinating and Controlling daily operations of the organization.
  • Providing advice, guidance, direction and authorization to carry out major plans, standards and procedures, consistent with established policies and international best practice.
  • Establishing and maintaining an effective system of communication throughout the organization.
  • Representing the Company with major customers, shareholders, financial community and the public.
  • Leading the development and implementation of the Company's Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) policy.
The ideal candidate will be a holder of a university degree in Business Management, Finance, Commercial or Engineering disciplines coupled with 10 years of progressive experience at senior levels and a demonstrable record of success in a manufacturing and competitive business environment preferably in the cement sector.

An understanding of finance is essential. A Masters degree in Business Administration will be mandatory.

He should also be a self confident, pragmatic, innovative, transformative and visionary leader with exceptional analytical and problem solving skills, excellent communication and interpersonal skills and experience in management of diverse teams.

An attractive remuneration package commensurate with the responsibilities of the job and the experience of the individual will be negotiated with the right candidate.

The position is on a three (3) years renewable contract based on annual Performance Contract.
