- Duties and Responsibilities:
Under the direct supervision of the Snr. Protection Officer, the incumbent will perform the following tasks:
(a) Assists the Protection Unit in developing and implementing a strategic protection framework which ensures the safety and well being of persons of concern in accordance with international standards;
(b) Contributes to co-ordination of Protection responses by supporting the Protection Cluster and its sub-working-groups in Nairobi and in Somalia. Assist the office to analyze and compile reports based on country of origin information and other protection-related reports;
(c) Participates in the development of training materials and relevant modules on protection and human rights training for Protection Cluster partners and other relevant stakeholders in Somalia. Participates in the development and roll out of new training kits and various protection trainings to staff and partners with the aim of building/strengthening their capacity to address protection issues in the field;
(d) Supports Field Offices in the design and implementation of participatory approaches and community-based Protection responses;
(e) Coordinates the mainstreaming of gender and HIV/AIDS into programs;
(f) Represents the office in meetings and other forums as requested by the Snr Protection Officer;
(g) Undertakes regular missions to Somalia in support of Protection activities and capacity building initiatives;
(h) Translates/interprets from/to Somali as and when required;
(i) Performs any other duties as required.
2. Qualifications:
Education and Skills: University degree in Law, International Law, Political Science or related field.
Desirable qualifications: Advanced studies or specialisation in Human Rights or refugee related studies is desirable. Should possess very good drafting and reporting skills and good analytical and writing skills. Should display good interpersonal skills and ability to comfortably work in a multi-cultural team.
Experience: Three years job experience, preferably in related functional areas.
Languages: Very good knowledge and fluency in English. Knowledge of Somali language and context is highly desirable.
Application of Guidelines: Relevant UNHCR policies, guidelines and procedures, and UNHCR records management criteria.
Supervision exercised and guidance given:
May supervise or give guidance to lower level staff.
