ILRI seeks to recruit a Research Technician to play a key role within the Market Opportunities Theme in leading ILRI’s evolving and expanding portfolio of research addressing smallholder livestock producer competitiveness and technology uptake.
The Research Technician will be attached to the East Africa Dairy Development Project, a project led by Heifer International and implemented in partnership with ILRI, TNS, ABS-TCM and the World Agro Forestry.

Key responsibilities
- Contribute to the design and implementation of agro-economic field studies, in collaboration with other project staff (ILRI and other project institutions)
- Undertake data analyses and assist with developing appropriate technical, policy and institutional solutions at the farm and market levels to improve smallholder dairy farmers’ competitiveness and access to remunerative and reliable markets at the project sites
- Provide support in report writing and dissemination of results to project partners and other stakeholders
- Contribute to cultivating and supporting a productive working relationship with project partners and stakeholders through a strong communication strategy..
Requirements
- A minimum of a Masters degree in Agricultural Economics, Agribusiness or related field, and at least 2 years of experience working in a research for development environment
- Well versed in quantitative and qualitative research design (including sampling issues) and data collection methodologies
- Demonstrated skills and experience in quantitative economics including competence in data handling and analysis using standard and statistical softwares (specifically Stata, SPSS or SAS).
- Team player with experience of working in multi-cultural teams
- Excellent writing skills
- Excellent communication skills
Terms of appointment: This is a Nationally Recruited Staff (NRS) position based at ILRI’s Nairobi campus, and at the EADD regional office in Nairobi (up to 3 days per week). The position is open to Kenyan nationals only. The position is on a 2-year contract renewable subject to satisfactory performance and availability of funding.
