“The Wood Family Trust (WFT) is a Scottish registered charity established by UK industrialist Sir Ian Wood and his family with a key objective to improve livelihoods by stimulating viable market opportunities that will in turn create jobs and generate wealth among the rural poor.
This vision is shared by Lord David Sainsbury, a well-known British businessman and former politician who is also founder of the Gatsby Charitable Foundation. Together Sir Ian and Lord Sainsbury, through their respective charitable entities, have joined resources in a coordinated effort to support transformation of the tea sector in Tanzania.
Over a six year period the Chai Project WFT/Gatsby will commit up to $9 million with the aspiration of:
1) doubling smallholder made tea production; and
2) increasing overall competitiveness of the sector.
The Project has a small core team and is moving into its implementation phase, so is seeking to recruit a Chai Project Manager to facilitate oversight of activities and communication with all stakeholders.
Main duties and responsibilities:
The Chai Project Manager would be required to assist with all activities under the Chai Project and these would include but not be limited to:
- Performing detailed on-the-ground due diligence of proposed Chai investment grants
- Guiding the design and implementation of Chai activities
- Undertaking M&E of ongoing activities, including verification of smallholder impact
- Designing Chai Investment grants including monitoring and evaluation processes
- Providing direct support to managers in building the capacity of organizations in which we invest
- Communicating progress to all stakeholders, drafting documents, presentations etc.
Attributes/ capabilities:
- A dynamic person with a lot of energy
- A very high level of integrity, honesty and a sense of responsibility
- General knowledge and/or exposure to agriculture-based industry, preferably tea
- Familiarity with SH farmer associations or cooperatives
- Willing to undertake significant field travel in Tanzania
- Able to gain the trust and confidence of all tea industry stakeholders
- Experience of managing a portfolio of activities covering a variety of disciplines, including technical and financial M&E
- Strategic and structured thinker, focused on understanding ‘the why’ rather than ‘the what’
- Open-minded and innovative, but with a strong commercial and practical focus
Qualifications:
- Degree in Business, Economics, Social Sciences or Agricultural Sciences
- Fluency in English and Swahili
- At least five (5) years progressive work experience in related areas
- Computer literate, able to work comfortably with powerpoint and spreadsheets
