Research Technician-Data Management for the Poverty and Gender Programme

Main duties and responsibilities:
  • Design of data entry templates for surveys
  • Create and maintain data management system
  • Assist in creating code books for surveys
  • Train and manage the work of data entry clerks
  • Assist in sourcing necessary secondary data
  • Basic data analysis
Preferred Skills:
  • Minimum of Higher diploma in information management (e.g. MIS) or related field from a recognized institution
  • Three years of progressive experience in data collection and management of entry and cleaning processes
  • Experience in database management and data analysis
  • Good working knowledge of GIS, Stata, SPSS or any statistical package is an added advantage

Duration: 1 year
ILRI seeks to recruit a Field Research Supervisor for the Poverty and Gender Programme.
Job Description – Main duties and responsibilities:
  • Assist in identification, evaluation, recruitment, training and supervision of enumerators during field surveys and other field activities
  • Coordinate field logistics for project staff including: accommodation, transport scheduling, supplies and other details where necessary, ensuring tasks are carried out according to set timelines.
  • Manage and maintain field budgets, payments, resources and records
  • Help oversee smooth field relations by maintaining good contact and relations with participating farmers, community stakeholders, provincial administration and leaders
  • Assist in organizing and running local meetings including Focus Group Discussions, interactions with Key Informants and any other meetings as may be necessary during fieldwork
  • Participate in survey planning and execution, up to and including the management of data entry and cleaning; this will require an appreciation of the research objectives
  • Any other duties that may be assigned by the senior project staff
Preferred Skills:
  • Minimum of a Masters degree in a social science field (Sociology, Economics, Agricultural Economics etc) from a recognized institution, master’s level training with research work is an added advantage.
  • At least three years of field experience with socioeconomic surveys.
Desired qualities:
  • Ability to work well in a multidisciplinary team
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Previous experience in and ability to maintain good relations with the participating farmers and stakeholders
  • Skilled at maintaining accurate records, including undertaking questionnaire-based surveys
  • Ability to work with minimum supervision
  • Willingness to learn new field techniques where appropriate
  • Willingness to travel and work in often difficult field conditions for extended periods at a time
Terms of appointment: This is a Nationally Recruited Staff (NRS) position based in Marsabit town and is on a 1-year contract renewable subject to six months probation period, individual performance and availability of funding. Salary and benefits will be in line with those provided within ILRI’s NRS scheme.
