YBD Oxford
The Youth Business Development (YBD) competition has been a proud achievement in Entrepreneurship and Business Development by Saïd students over the last 5 years.
It works as follows.
What it is
Teams of 3-5 young entrepreneurs from anywhere in the world submit summary business proposals to SBS; the best are matched with mentors from among current MBA students. The teams and their mentors work on their business plans for three months through our dedicated online platform (http://youthbusdev.org) and then present them to a judging panel which includes senior finance practitioners. The winning team (or teams) are awarded a prize and offered continuing guidance in their project.
Who is involved
YBD was founded by current president Dan Marmar, an MBA alumnus of 2005/06 and current CEO Udara Peiris, an MFE alumnus of the same year and current doctoral student in Financial Economics. The advisory board is composed of Marc Jones, former Managing Director at JP Morgan and is chaired by Howard Jones of SBS’s Finance Faculty and former head of equity capital markets at BNP Paribas. It also includes Meng Zhao, a doctoral student in Entrepreneurship and Karan Rai, an MBA alumnus of 2008/09. Dean Colin Mayer, and previously Dean Anthony Hopwood, have personally supported the competition. The judging panel this year included Marc, Howard, James Mallinson, Portfolio Manager at ISIS Innovations and David Cottam, Founding Partner at Park Square Capital.
Who can participate
YBD inspires and equips youth entrepreneurs, ages 16-25, from diverse geographic and economic backgrounds, by using the Oxford MBA class as a knowledge transfer vehicle. Since 2006, SBS has made an annual worldwide call for youth to develop business solutions to the economic, social, and environmental challenges in their respective communities.
