Information & Communications Coordinator Job Vacancy at Save the Children UK, Kenya Programme

Save the Children UK is part of the Save the Children Alliance a leading international child rights organization, fighting to improve the lives of children in over 40 countries around the world. Together with children, we are helping to build a better world for present and future generations by making a reality of children’s rights.

We are seeking a qualified candidate to fill the position of Information & Communications Coordinator based in our Nairobi Office.

Job Purpose

Lead in developing and implementing a communication strategy for building the understanding, profile and visibility of Save the Children Alliance in Kenya programme amongst key stakeholders (staff, communities, Donors, Government, INGOs, Regional Office, Global Headquarters ) for purposes of public relationship building, advocacy and fundraising.

This post is initially for a minimum period of one year.

Key Responsibilities
  • In the event of emergencies, alliance/non alliance declared emergencies, be a point of contact and produce well researched, corroborated and accurate regular situation reports and ensure their timely dissemination to relevant stakeholders internally and externally.
  • Working closely with Programme Quality and Design Director, Technical Advisers and Field based Managers and other field staff effectively design IEC materials as well as document the impact of SCUK work through case studies, human interest stories, photographs etc to internal and external audiences.
  • Liaise with relevant staff and contractors to design, review, revise and finalize communication materials e.g. Project information, education & communication materials, Power point presentations posters, project reports, lessons learned, briefing papers, news letters, press releases, publications.
  • Produce monthly (bi-monthly) electronic newsletter about Save the Children work in Kenya and share with staff, Regional Office, Alliance members and donors
  • Lead in working with national and international media houses/journalists in Kenya to accurately document and disseminate broad information about Save the Children work in Kenya, in line with Save the Children media protocols. This shall include accompanying them on visits to field programmes, reviewing press releases and footage before public broadcast etc.
  • Lead in designing and organizing publicity events for Save the Children in close consultation with SMT and technical advisers and other relevant staff.
  • To act as a point of contact for information provision on the emergency and non emergency programmes for other departments/Alliance members including media, emergencies, marketing and advocacy & policy teams.
  • Ensure protection of Save the Children Alliance brand and all procedures, protocols and policies are followed, including guidelines for interviewing children and documenting permission for use of digital images.
  • Implement and maintain a library of soft and hard copies of key documents for use by the programme and disseminate a list of documents available regularly to the programme team.
Essential
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mass Communication/Media studies.
  • 5 years experience in a similar role with international INGOs or private sector.
  • Excellent relationship building skills both within the programme and with media in-country.
  • Strong communications planning skills – understanding how to plan and implement strategy.
  • Experience in managing large amounts of information, and the ability to triangulate information quickly.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills and experience writing communications outputs: situation reports, case studies, factsheets/briefings and diaries.
  • Ability to work effectively and calmly in a high-pressure environment and to prioritize and effectively manage assignments in a timely fashion.
  • Basic photographic skills.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English and Kiswahili.
  • Commitment to and understanding of Save the Children’s aims, values and principles.
Desirable:
  • Understanding of the commissioning process for photography and video.
  • Ability to speak other international languages.
  • Basic photography and video skills.
