Population Services International (PSI) is the world’s leading non-profit social marketing organization, operating in more than 60 developing countries. PSI creates demand for essential health products and services by using private sector marketing techniques and innovative communications campaigns to motivate positive changes in health behavior. On the supply side, PSI works with the commercial sector to increase the availability of these products and services at prices which are affordable to at-risk populations. With a bottom-line orientation that is rare among non-profits, PSI social markets products and services for family planning, maternal and child health, and the prevention of AIDS, malaria and other diseases. In order to decrease child mortality from malaria and recognizing the need to introduce home-based management of malaria (HMM) programs using ACT, PSI is implementing the community-based program with support from Global Fund Round 7. In line with the guidelines of the Ministry of Health (MoH) of the Southern Sudan, the community-based ACT distribution system will be supplemented with anti-diarrhea kits (pre-packaged ORS and zinc) and pneumonia treatment in order to ensure comprehensive child survival program at the community level in rural areas. The project will aid in decreasing under-5 mortality rates by training community-based distributors in the diagnosis, treatment and counseling for prevention of these illnesses, as well as in the process of recognizing severe illness requiring referral to a Primary Health Care Unit (Center).
The program is comprised of the four main components that include behavior change communication (BCC); management of supply chain for treatment of malaria, pneumonia and diarrhea specifically in children under 5 years old; establishment and strengthening of the networks of community-based distributors (CBDs) in rural areas; and strengthening of the national health management information systems (HMIS) from the grass-roots levels of CBD networks to health facilities and County Health Departments (CHDs). The program successfully started in Yei, Morobo Lainya, and Mundri counties of Central and Western Equatoria will be replicated in Wau and three additional counties of Western Bahr el Ghazal in November 2011.
