VSF-Suisse Vacancies in Southern Sudan

Background:

VSF-Suisse is an International NGO, supporting community based animal health programmes, food aid and food security, rehabilitation and development programmes in the Horn of Africa (HoA) region since 1995.
The organization implements the EC-funded Livestock-crops production and marketing project in Northern Bahr el Ghazal State, Southern Sudan.
The project aims to enhance improved livelihoods and self-reliance of target households through
(i) improved crops-livestock production practices;
(ii) livestock assets re-distribution and training;
(ii) further development of appropriate crops, livestock and livestock products marketing;
(iii) support institution and capacity building to relevant GoSS Ministries and the private sector.
We are seeking to fill the following positions immediately for the above project. The positions are field based and candidates should be willing to reside and work under basic but improving living conditions.
1. Agricultural Technician (1 Position)

Key Responsibilities:-
Under the supervision of the Project Manager, the position holder will implement Agro-Forestry related project activities.
  • Support the design, establishment, and operation of Farmers Field Schools (FFS) and primary school environmental clubs
  • Supervise and provide general and technical guidance to FFs facilitators.
  • Develop together with the FFs facilitators’ season long training curriculum/work plans for the FFs and ensure its implementation as per identified farmers needs.
  • Support FFs Facilitators and farmers to identify causes and develop on farm solutions to challenges experienced on farms
  • Mobilize communities and participate in project needs and opportunity assessments and advice accordingly.
  • Advise on procurement, storage and utilization of inputs for integrated farming
  • Assist in the design and implementation of data collection methodology, project monitoring and evaluation tools.
  • Support the development of relevant extension material for integrated farming
  • Training and supervising subordinate personnel in the proper methods and techniques of environmentally sound and integrated crops and livestock production
  • Ensuring high-quality reports are submitted in a timely manner and according to donor and Line Manager’s requirements.
Qualifications, Experience, Attributes & Skills required
  • Bachelor’s Degree and/or Diploma in General Agriculture, Agricultural Education and Extension or related field.
  • 3-5 years of experience focused in the management of transitional and development programs
  • Experience working in an NGO setting
  • Experience and knowledge in the design and implementation of farmer field school approaches
  • Working experience in livestock/poultry husbandry; dairy hygiene and marketing
  • Experience in implementing fruit and multi-purpose trees and vegetable production production, management and marketing projects
  • Prior experience in Southern Sudan desired for non Sudanese
  • Excellent analytical/problem-solving skills and detail-orientation
  • Excellent English communication skills (oral and written)
  • Proven organizational skills and time management
  • Excellent computer skills; excel, ms word
2. Dairy Technologist (1 Position)

Key Responsibilities:-
Under the supervision of the Project Manager and in collaboration with other technical staff, the position holder will implement activities related to milk production and marketing.
S/he will:
  • Assess current milk handling practises among producers, vendors and traders and identify appropriate interventions to be supported to enhance milk hygiene
  • Provide technical training to milk producers, milk vendors/traders and consumers on hygienic milk production and handling
  • Develop appropriate extension material for milk hygiene, value addition and marketing
  • Support organisational and business management skills development among milk vendors and traders
  • Design and implement milk collection, handling, processing and marketing practices, appropriate for the region in line with market demand and traditional preferences.
  • Institute quality control measures at all critical points in the milk handling process.
  • Participate in Monitoring and Evaluation activities of the milk project including development of data collection tools per project design
  • Ensuring high-quality reports are submitted in a timely manner and according to donor and Line Manager’s requirements.
Qualifications, Experience, Attributes & Skills required
  • Diploma or Certificate in Dairy Science or a related field.
  • 3-5 years of experience focused in the management of transitional and development programs
  • Experience working in an NGO setting
  • Prior experience in Southern Sudan desirable for non Sudanese
  • Excellent analytical/problem-solving skills and detail-orientation
  • Excellent English communication skills (oral and written)
  • Proven organizational skills and time management
  • Excellent computer skills; excel, ms word
