BBC World Service Trust Juba - Research Officer

BACKGROUND
The BBC World Service Trust, the international development arm of the BBC, is beginning a new national media capacity building project in Sudan. Under this project, the Trust will be carrying out research and providing mentoring training in basic production and reporting skills to stations across southern Sudan.
 
As part of a team based in Juba- with frequent, extended travel around the country- you will conduct research with guidance from the Research team and support team in London.  You will help to design, coordinate and conduct activities, which include gathering information on the media environment in Sudan, conducting interviews, analysing data and reporting and disseminating information.
 
MAIN DUTIES
  • Assist with research design
  • Liaise with people on the ground to recruit decision makers for interviews
  • Conduct depth interviews with decision makers and representatives from media organisations
  • Visit chosen partner media organisations and conduct face-to-face depth interviews with staff
  • Supervise and mentor researchers within partner organisations in conducting interviews and focus groups
  • Manage the collection of data – transcription and translation of depth interviews and collation of media organisation information
  • Analyse transcripts from depth interviews and information and assist with gathering information and writing up findings for the final reporting
Other
  • Travel throughout Southern Sudan when necessary.
  • Perform other duties as required in the establishment and management of the Project.
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Fluent in spoken and written English language, and one other local language.
  • Attention to detail and the ability to work speedily and accurately under pressure.
  • Excellent organisational and administrative skills to prioritise work, meet deadlines and respond flexibly to rapidly changing priorities.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and appropriately both to colleagues and interviewees.
  • Ability to establish good working relationships with colleagues and work as a member of a team.
  • Self-motivated and willing to learn about quantitative and qualitative research techniques.
  • Good IT skills, including MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint are desirable, although training will be given to the appropriate candidate.
