The Science Dissemination Unit (SDU) at the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) in Trieste, Italy, facilitates the transfer of knowledge and the exchange of scientific information via information and communication technologies. Starting in 2010, the SDU is offering an academic webcasting grant to have an “off-the-shelf” solution for online learning. The aim is to help non-profit institutions from countries that are members of the United Nations, UNESCO or IAEA to implement the automated production of on-line scientific content (via webinars) and e-learning and distance education (via web lectures).
The Grant
The SDU grant provides a complete set of the openEyA recording system (worth about 650 Euros), including all necessary hardware and software. It may be awarded to up to three different organizations.
The recording system consists of a Netbook, (which comes installed with openEyA and the Linux Open Source operating system), an omni-directional USB microphone, a digital camera, a webcam, and power cables. For more details, visit the openEyA website: www.openeya.org

EyA (“Enhance your Audience”) is an innovative automated audio/video/slide recording system, developed to archive and share scientific lectures and talks carried out using digital presentations (PPT, PDF, animations, etc.) as well as traditional chalkboards or whiteboards found in classrooms.
The EyA system has these main features (see examples):
Eligible organizations must be not-for-profit, based in a developing country, and aiming to contribute more efficiently to capacity building and development. The grant will not be given to an individual. Grant recipients must agree to the following terms:
All eligible entries will be judged by SDU based on a balance of the following criteria, which must be addressed in the application letter (see “How to Apply”):
How to Apply?
Application for the SDU grant is free. To apply, an organization’s official representative must send a signed letter containing the information below, and addressing the grantee requirements mentioned above. The entry must be written in English to qualify. All information collected will be treated as confidential. The decisions by the SDU will be final and binding.

Applications must be received by Thursday 25 February 2010. Finalists (up to 3) will be notified via e-mail soon after the deadline and the grant equipment and software will be delivered thereafter.
SDU is not responsible for technical failures of any kind, including but not limited to the malfunctioning of any computer, cable, hardware, or software delivered. Any taxes on grants or prizes are the sole responsibility of the winning organizations. The Grant is not transferable to a person or any other organization.

- scalable architecture;
- no special requirements for the speaker or lecturer;
- high-resolution images;
- low-cost ownership and implementation;
- low-bandwidth friendly features (zip, CD, DVD).
Eligible organizations must be not-for-profit, based in a developing country, and aiming to contribute more efficiently to capacity building and development. The grant will not be given to an individual. Grant recipients must agree to the following terms:
- start academic webcasting at their institutes using openEyA as soon as possible;
- coordinate the necessary permissions by lecturers;
- publish recorded lectures on the web and distribute them in digital form for educational purposes only;
- to not endorse or sponsor any commercial product, service or activity, and
- to not permit the recorded material to be used for commercial purposes;
- publicise their online lectures.
All eligible entries will be judged by SDU based on a balance of the following criteria, which must be addressed in the application letter (see “How to Apply”):
- access to the Internet with a reasonable bandwidth (demonstrated via an existing website or network speed measurements);
- a dedicated web server with enough disk space to make available the organization’s own digital lectures (please provide a web address or URL in the application letter).
