Job Summary
The Africa Regional Director is responsible for providing overall leadership and supervision in the planning and implementation of the institute’s development programs in Africa. The primary function is resource mobilization, program and human resources development and management.
The Director will manage a team of professionals based in Nairobi but also provide support to Country Directors. The Director reports to the President and is a member of the institute’s Senior Management Team.

The Director will manage a team of professionals based in Nairobi but also provide support to Country Directors. The Director reports to the President and is a member of the institute’s Senior Management Team.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Provide overall leadership and strategic direction for the regional programs (Learning Community and Capacity Development Outreach).
- Lead in the formulation of strategies, mid and short-term plans and budget and ensure their smooth implementation.
- Coordinate resource generation efforts including generation of proposals with Country Managers, Program Managers and the President and secure adequate funding for programs and operations.
- Development and maintenance of strategic linkages/partnership with partner agencies and members of the donor community.
- Actively participate and perform independent activities that relate to capacity development outreach which include international and customized trainings, documentation and other technical assignments.
- Provide leadership and supervise a team of professionals with diverse expertise and responsibilities across the region.
- Ensure that systems (finance, reporting, internal controls, human resource, and communication) are functioning and improved if necessary across the region.
- Represent IIRR in all relevant factions including government agencies bilateral and multilateral organizations and others in the region.
- Play active role in global senior management team and contribute to the development of IIRR global program.
Qualifications:
- Masters or PhD degree in development management, international development, economics, social sciences or related fields.
- At least ten (10) years of relevant work experience in program development, management, and fund raising with national, regional, and international development agencies.
- Held similar or equivalent position for a minimum of five (5) years and have a proven record of managing teams, financial and other resources of an organization.
- Have a good understanding and experience in capacity building and organizational development and have practical experience in training, facilitation and consulting.
- Excellent written and communication skills in English; knowledge of French is a plus.
- Strong understanding and working experience in key IIRR programs which include disaster risk reduction, basic education, value chain, and gender.
- Proven track record in fundraising, proposal writing skills and have built strong networks with donors and development community stakeholders in the region.
- Be familiar and have practical experience in methods, tools, techniques in participatory planning, monitoring and evaluation.
- Strong leadership and team building experience and upholds gender equality.
- Be computer proficient and uses information technology (IT) for day to day functions of his or her work.
