Organizational Setting and Reporting

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations systems designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level (www.unep.org). Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. UNEP's Division of Early Warning and Assessment (DEWA) is responsible for analyzing the state of the global environment, providing early warning information and assessing global and regional environmental trends to catalyze and promote international cooperation and action on the environment. This post is located in UNEP/ DEWA, at the Nairobi Duty Station. Under the direct supervision of the Senior Environmental Affairs Officer of the Integrated Environmental Assessment Section (IEA), the incumbent will perform the following duties:

Responsibilities
1. Support the Head of the IEA Section in coordinating the implementation of scientific and integrated environmental assessments in particular the Global Environment Outlook (GEO): Organize preparation and drafting of project documents and agreements; Contribute to training programmes; Liaise and guide partners and external consultants in their work; Review and develop guidelines for the production of GEO reports; Organize and represent DEWA in meetings, workshops and make presentations.
2. Implement the assessment component of the programme work ensuring that outcomes feed into the implementation of the UNEP priority areas.
3. Provide support to the UNEP Climate Change Sub-programme Coordinator in climate change assessments; Contribute to developing and implementing the climate change strategy and sub programme on climate change, including exploring possible joint actions within relevant existing and planned initiatives.
4. Represent division interests and contribute to DEWA's overall climate change work (programmatic, technical and ad-hoc) including inputs and support to Global Adaptation Network (GAN), Programme for Research on Vulnerability, Impacts and Adaptation (PRO-VIA), United Nations collaborative initiative on UN-Reduction Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (UN-REDD) and matters related to Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPPCC); Backstopping field projects in East Africa, West Africa and South Asia for integrating adaptation into national development planning processes.
5. Contribute to the development of knowledge products and communication materials related to integrating adaptation into national development planning processes (including science-policy dialogues) in targeted countries and disseminate through knowledge sharing strategies.

Education
Advanced university degree in environmental studies or environmental related field (i.e., natural resource management, earth science, geography, forestry) is required. A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience
A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in project or programme management and/ or administration in the areas of climate change assessment and Intergrated Environmental Assessment is required.

Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
