Qualifications & Experience:

    * BSc Degree or HND in Analytical Chemistry /Biochemistry.

    * Be familiar with local and international test methods for trace elements and residue analysis in environmental work.
    * Have a good understanding of experimental designs and be well-versed in the scientific method of cross data correlation and interpretation techniques.
    * Good knowledge of ISO 17025, ISO 9001:2008, Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) systems and quality control processes with a strong bias in statistical quality control.
    * Good skills in procedure writing, data interpretation and report writing
    * Team player with good interpersonal and communication skills.

Laboratory Technologist - US Army Medical Research Unit

The US Army Medical Research Unit-Kenya (USAMRU-K) / Henry Jackson Foundation for Medical Research International (HJF MRI) The Walter Reed Project' HIV Program - Kericho is seeking to fill the position below.

The HIV Program carries out HIV AIDS vaccine and therapeutic research studies and supports HIV prevention, care and treatment programs in southern Rift Valley.

Laboratory Technologist

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

Duties of an officer in this position will include separation, aliquoting and archiving of patient serum / plasma for long term frozen storage.

He/she will document and maintain sample processing records and enter the aliquoted and archived sample into a database for easy retrieval.

The officer will also prepare solutions, reagents and stains in accordance with standard laboratory formulas and procedures.

He/she will be expected to operate basic laboratory equipment such as centrifuge, analytical balance and pH meter.

The officer will maintain and make minor adjustments to equipments e.g. calibration and alignment. The officer may also be called upon to collect blood and other samples from patients.

He/she will record and compile daily readings on all temperature controlled laboratory equipment and areas and maintain laboratory freezers and fridges.

He/she will be expected to comply with all relevant safety and infection control policies and procedures and ensures tidiness of laboratory rooms and benches.

Minimum Requirements:
* Higher Diploma in Medical Laboratory Sciences.
* Minimum two years working experience in a busy medical laboratory.
* Excellent knowledge of laboratory operations and procedures.

Additional Requirements:

* Knowledge and experience in Peripheral Blood Mononuclear cell (PBMC) separation and storage.
* Registration with the Kenya Medical Laboratory Technologists and Technicians Board
* Good knowledge of HIV / AIDS and previous experience in research
* Excellent computer skills

KEY RESULT AREAS

3. Oversee the implementation of the agreed plans including establishment of QA/QC processes and skills monitoring.
4. Support districts to ensure that their lab focal person Implement the World Health Organization (WHO) five step laboratory accreditation systems.
5. Contribute to lab training activities and ongoing mentorship.

Specifications
The successful candidate should have;
1. A bachelor's degree in Biomedical laboratory Technology
2. Additional qualifications in Laboratory Management is an added advan¬tage.
3. At least 2-3 years experience in Lab planning, Management and QA/QC

Laboratory Specialist Vacancy

An international NGO, implementing comprehensive HIV prevention, care and treatment programs to facilitate the Kenya Ministries of Medical Services and Public Health to control the spread of HIV and rapidly scale up HIV services with primary goal of supporting the scale-up of HIV prevention, care, and treatment activities, institute continuous quality improvement methods as well as the M&E infrastructure necessary to support these services, within designated health care facilities in Nairobi is seeking suitably qualified Kenyans able to fill the above position.

The Laboratory Specialist will report to the Senior Technical Advisor

Purpose of Position

Under the supervision of the STA, the Laboratory Specialist will work to ensure proper transfer of the global organisational Laboratory strategy by providing technical assistance and capacity building to Point of Service laboratory scientists and technicians in support of laboratory activities.

S/he will provide oversight to the Laboratory components at Point of Services

Duties and Responsibilities

Laboratory Assessments (including suggested training and equipment procurement)
  • Conduct an assessment of a laboratory during each visit to the laboratory to assess capacity, quality control and assurance, and laboratory needs.
Laboratory Capacity Building and Technical Assistance
  • The laboratory Specialist will be trained to assist laboratories in capacity building.
  • This involves training, including but not limited to, equipment techniques, didactic trainings, review of information and techniques learned during site activation, reagent forecasting and procurement, laboratory flow/specimen tracking, and maintenance.
Laboratory Logistics in Country
  • Where necessary the laboratory Specialist will support LPTFs to forecast their reagent needs, procure reagents from manufacturers and ensure timely distribution of the reagents to the points of service.
  • Viral Load Sampling and selective viral load testing (as a part of PACT Quality Improvement and for patient management)
  • Facilitate the collection and transport of viral load samples to the laboratories performing the viral load analysis.
Laboratory Troubleshooting
  • The laboratory Specialist will assist all points of service in troubleshooting all problems that occur within a laboratory.
  • When necessary, the laboratory Specialist will facilitate the use of reference or other laboratories to perform the testing that a laboratory is unable to perform if a piece of equipment is not functioning.
Representation and networking
  • Establish relationships with any laboratories designated as central laboratories for selected services.
  • The laboratory Specialist will work closely with these laboratories to ensure PACT supported LPTFs have timely and adequate access to these services.
  • The laboratory Specialist will work with partners and stakeholders within the region to ensure PACT is adequately and appropriately represented at all levels.
Desired Qualifications
  • Registration with KMLTTB
  • Higher diploma (Virology) or BSc MLS
  • 5-7 years work experience
  • Proficiency in computer packages for generating/analysis of reports
  • Working knowledge on donor funded programs

Salary: KSh.73, 706 – 146, 659 (Dependent on qualification and experience)
Job Purpose: The main job purpose is to plan and coordinate the implementation of a new laboratory repository system utilizing MySQL based (“Labcollector”) LIMS architecture, ensuring all processes are client friendly, robust, stable, easily maintained, scalable and future proofed.
Reporting Lines: The post holder will report to the Head of Laboratory Services, East Africa
Key Responsibilities:
The post holder will:
  • In close collaboration with Centre IT specialists and senior laboratory management, develop and implement a strategic plan to upgrade the Centre’s existing Biological Specimen Repository processes using LABCOLLECTOR LIMS software.
  • Develop well defined procedures to log new samples and link data, and to manage retrieval and re-entry processes.
  • Plan and coordinate all new study/project sample storage requests in close liaison with researchers.
  • Produce maintenance plans for the repository with appropriate auditable Quality Systems incorporated that comply with international regulatory standards.
  • Future proofing – ensure long-term scalability to a larger network of studies and users
  • Produce clear and complete documentation of all procedures and processes.
  • Plan and perform user inductions and regular update trainings.
  • Incorporate appropriate biological and data security measures and restriction policies
  • Ensure all plans and procedures are incorporated in to a long term BCP
  • Advance plan for future physical and software expansions as required
  • Roll-out the system to other areas of the Centre, and other sites throughout the E.  African region as required.
Essential Criteria:
  • Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in library and information science, records/archive management or areas related to information management. A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be considered.
  • At least five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in modern archive management, record keeping, curation or repository coordination, library, or information management functions of which a minimum of two (2) years should be in electronic records management.
  • Experience in project management including supervision or people management.
  • Demonstrated exceptional organisational,  documentation and presentation skills
  • Demonstrated experience with database management systems including querying
Desirable:
  • An interest in medical research
  • Experience with Laboratory Information Management Systems
  • Diploma in project management
  • Experience working with MySQL
  • Experience of working in accordance with international regulatory standards
  • Experience of working in an international organization

The US Army Medical Research Unit-Kenya (USAMRU-K) / Henry Jackson Foundation for Medical Research International (HJF MRI) ‘The Walter Reed Project’ HIV Program – Kericho is seeking to fill the positions listed below.
The HIV Program carry out HIV AIDS vaccine and therapeutic research studies and support HIV prevention, care and treatment programs in southern Rift Valley.
1. Counseling Officer / Community Field Worker

Key Duties and responsibilities
The officer will conduct community outreaches to mobilize the community particularly most at risk populations (MARPs) for purposes of HIV prevention. He / she will conduct training for health workers and most at risk populations .The officer will provide counseling for the most at risk populations and support all HIV preventions activities and programs. He /she will prepare reports as required and liaise with various governmental and non-governmental partners in planning for HIV prevention outreach activities.
Minimum Requirements:
  • Diploma in Community Development/Public health or Social Work from a recognized institution.
  • At least 3 years working experience with recognized CBO/NGO in relevant community development programs particularly in HIV/AIDS prevention
Additional Requirements:
  • Applicants with Higher Diploma in Psychological Counseling will be given preference.
  • Demonstrated experience in conducting trainings for health workers and the community.
  • Good knowledge of Microsoft Office programs (Excel, PowerPoint and Word).
  • Being a registered member of the Kenya Counseling Association would be an added advantage
  • Good team player with excellent communication and interpersonal skills
2. Laboratory Technologist
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Duties of an officer in this position will include separation, aliquoting and archiving of patient serum / plasma for long term frozen storage. He/she will document and maintain sample processing records and enter the aliquoted and archived sample into a database for easy retrieval.
The officer will also prepare solutions, reagents and stains in accordance with standard laboratory formulas and procedures. He/she will be expected to operate basic laboratory equipment such as centrifuge, analytical balance
and pH meter. The officer will maintain and make minor adjustments to equipments e.g. calibration and alignment.

The officer may also be called upon to collect blood and other samples from patients. He/she will record and compile daily readings on all temperature controlled laboratory equipments and areas and maintain laboratory freezers and fridges. He/she will be expected to comply with all relevant safety and infection control policies and procedures and ensures tidiness of laboratory rooms and benches.
Minimum Requirements:
  • Higher Diploma in Medical Laboratory Sciences
  • Minimum two years working experience in a busy medical laboratory.
  • Excellent knowledge of laboratory operations and procedures.
Additional Requirements:
  • Knowledge and experience in Peripheral Blood Mononuclear cell (PBMC) separation and storage.
  • Registration with the Kenya Medical Laboratory Technologists and Technicians Board.
  • Good knowledge of HIV / AIDS and previous experience in research.
  • Excellent computer skills
  • Ability to carry out duties and responsibilities with minimum supervision.

Laboratory Technologist - KEMRI/USAMRU-K – The Walter Reed Project

Position: Laboratory Technologist
(2 positions)
Position Description: The laboratory technologist will be responsible for carrying out tests for diagnosis, determining eligibility, and monitoring safety of interventions for subjects participating in malarial clinical trials and other vaccine related initiatives involving clinical research.

Essential Requirements:
  • Must be a holder of a diploma in Medical Laboratory sciences from a recognized medical training institution.
  • Must be registered with the Kenya Medical Laboratory Technologist & Technicians Board (KMLTTB)
  • At least 3 years experience in a busy clinical laboratory to include malaria microscopy.
  • Experience in a clinical research and clinical microbiology will be an added advantage.
  • Good phlebotomy skills
  • Basic computer skills
Desirable Qualities
  • A proof of validated competency in malaria microscopy including, smear preparation, staining, detection, speciation and enumeration of malaria parasites
  • Experience in clinical microbiology procedures to include but not limited to; culture and sensitivity, media preparation, automated blood cultures(BACTEC), bacterial antigen tests and CSF processing
  • Knowledge in Good Clinical Laboratory Practice (GCLP)
  • Competency in laboratory quality assurance procedures and laboratory safety
  • Excellent written/oral communication, interpersonal and organization skills
  • Ability to work with minimum supervision
  • Flexibility in accepting work assignments outside normal working hours
  • Ability to work accurately under time constraints and pressure
  • Work night shift
Specific Tasks and Responsibilities
  • Performs several analyses to include but are not limited to; phlebotomy, performing complete blood counts (automated), biochemical tests, isolation and identification of pathogenic organisms(automated and manual), ELISA, flow cytometry and preparation and reading of malarial slides
  • Performs analyzer functional checks, calibration, troubleshooting and preventive maintenance
  • Ability to develop and execute SOPs and other laboratory protocols
  • Specimen collection processing, storage shipping to overseas labs and documenting chain of custody
  • Laboratory documentation, record keeping and inventory management
  • Performing QA/QC procedures to include external quality assessment
