Job purpose
Save the Children UK has developed ambitious plans to grow income from grants and contracts in the 9 countries where we operate in East and Southern Africa region – including Angola, Ethiopia, Kenya, Mozambique, Somalia, South Africa, South Sudan, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe. This year, our income target is £51 million with plans to increase our income by 10% in each of the next two years with accelerated growth of 25% per annum in fragile states like Somalia, South Sudan and Zimbabwe.
This role will support the development of new proposals and business opportunities for countries in East and Southern Africa in order to help the organisation raise sufficient funding to meet its aspiration to be the world’s leading independent children’s charity. Specifically, the role will focus on the programme funding requirements of countries in the Horn of Africa (Ethiopia, Somalia, South Sudan and Kenya).
The Business Development Manager will work with country programmes in identifying donor opportunities; facilitating donor engagement at country and regional levels; assisting in the development of country fundraising strategies; and coordinating proposal development for large and strategic funding opportunities. The role is intended to strengthen the capacities of country programmes to raise restricted funding primarily from institutional donors.
The Business Development Manager will be a member of the Regional Management Team and will be located in Nairobi, Kenya. The role works closely with Country Programme teams (Country Directors, Programme Directors, and Finance Directors), Regional Programme team (including the Regional Programme Manager, Regional Finance Manager, and various thematic technical advisors), the Business Development Manager (Southern Africa), and the Government Partnerships team based in London.
The role has an external orientation and requires engagement with donors and other members of Save the Children International who provide programme funding. The position requires regular travel to countries in the Horn of Africa.
Key accountabilities
Identification of donor opportunities
  • Identify, research, and disseminate information on new funding opportunities from bilateral, multi-lateral, and other institutional donors.
  • Cultivate business relationships with external stakeholders and potential partners for large scale or strategic funding opportunities, either as a prime or sub-recipient in joint ventures.
  • Pro-actively seeks donor intelligence on prospective new opportunities or partnerships at a regional level.
Facilitate donor engagement
  • Ensures regional team cultivates and manages relationships with donor agencies at regional level as appropriate.
  • Ensures country programmes adopt donor engagement strategies and plans at country level.
  • Accompanies country directors, progamme managers, and others on donor visits.
  • Helps build strong donor relationships with SC UK home donors within the region, particularly DFID and the European Union.
Coordinate proposal development
  • Directly involved in the development of high-value, complex, or multi-country proposals or bids in the region.
  • Provides input and support to proposal development teams on proposals deemed medium or high risk.
  • Brokers technical assistance and other resources to support proposal development at country level where necessary.
Facilitate development of country fundraising strategies
  • Ensures development of country funding strategies through training, coaching, and other forms of capacity building.
  • Pro-actively encourages country programmes to seek new and larger funding opportunities.
  • Assists in developing funding strategies for thematic programme plans or multi-country initiatives in the region.
  • Business analysis
  • Monitors contracts and income secured against annual country and regional targets for management information purposes.
  • Provides quarterly and annual reports on income and contracts secured for the region
  • Monitors proposal pipelines at country and regional levels in order to collate funding gap analysis at a regional level.
  • Capacity building
  • Brokers training opportunities and resources to build various capacities in programme funding at country level – for instance, in proposal development, report writing, project cycle management, or donor compliance.

Commercial Manager

Reporting to the Managing Director, the Commercial Manager formulates and implements marketing, sales and customer relations strategies in order to increase the organization’s revenue.

Duties/Responsibilities
