Key Responsibilities

    * Implement all aspects of Forestry which are relevant to the company.
    * Organize and manage the annual mensuration and inventory of the timber plantations and ensure that proper records are maintained.
    * Plan and obtain the best possible seed and manage the nurseries for the timber seedlings, in liaison with the Estate management.
    * Organize and manage the felling plan; all aspects of replanting; first year maintenance of the timber plantations and thereafter a general upkeep program of the mature plantations.
    * Ensure preservation and conservation of all indigenous areas and the maintenance of these areas.
    * Establish what hectarages is available from the annual inventory, mensuration and planned tea production.
    * Organize and manage the felling and pole extraction from the selected fields.
    * Establish contacts with the buyers of the various types of poles and ensure that adequate records are maintained in liaison with Deputy General Manager-Field and General Manager.
    * Establish what the domestic timber and pallet requirement is and to supply the Estates and Factories accordingly.
    * Source a market for sawn timber and produce accordingly.

WWF Project Executant (PE) Vacancy in Kenya

WWF – the global conservation organization, with a large conservation programme in Kenya and the Eastern and Southern Africa Region is recruiting for the following positions in its Mara River Basin Programme.

The (2) positions to be based in Narok will work on full time basis to ensure that the project outputs and activities in their area of assignments are carried out as laid down in the project documents and are articulated to meet the laid down project objectives.
The Project Executant (PE) 
Key Specific Duties:
  1. Take overall leadership and managerial responsibility over the WWF-KCO Mara River Basin Management Initiative
  2. Understand the current ESARPO/KCO Strategic Plan and project document and develop a revised work plan for addressing the project objectives and meet all WWF reporting requirements.
  3. Work closely with key project stakeholders to identify their needs and extend support to these institutions by way of equipment, informal training, and expert advice on community oriented conservation activities.
  4. In consultation with WWF and other interested parties, carry out environmental education and public awareness programmes in the Mara River area through the circulation of education and extension materials, meetings, workshops, slides and film shows, pamphlets and posters.
  5. Provide advice on pertinent conservation issues in the area, search for lessons learned within the WWF network that are relevant to this project that could help improve the project implementation.
  6. Undertake any other duties in support of WWF’s programme in the Eastern Africa region as maybe requested by the Conservation Manager or the Country Director.
Qualifications & Experience:
  • Holder of BSc degree in Conservation, Biology, Ecology, Zoology, Botany or related Naural Resource Management field. An MSc degree will be an added advantage
  • Technical proficiency in Community based natural resource management. 
  • Additionally, good knowledge and working experience in forests, freshwater, Marine and/or Savanna Ecology.
  • Strong communication skills (written/oral), good team leader/player with strong interpersonal skills, excellent knowledge of Kiswahili is an added advantage.

Kenya Coffee Producers Association Jobs - Project Officer

Kenya Coffee Producers Association (KCPA) is a member organization of all Coffee Producers in Kenya. It exists to lobby for a conducive environment for coffee production and business, and implements projects which are beneficial to its members. KCPA has received a grant from AgriCord through the Swedish Cooperative Center to concurrently implement two pilot projects for the next 17 months. These projects are in tree planting and production of Biogas using coffee pulp.

The Association is seeking to recruit a dynamic person to the position of Project Officer based in its Nairobi with travel to the field office to implement these projects. The successful candidate will be offered a 17th month contract.
 
Key Responsibility

Reporting to the Executive Officer the project officer’s responsibilities will include the following:
• Implementation of the projects as per the proposals and donor expectations
• Identifying and recruiting project participants sites where these projects will be implemented.
• Identifying service providers to construct demonstration bio-gas plants
• Identifying service providers to build the capacity of existing tree nurseries so that they   
         produce trees which are compatible with coffee production

Forest Project Officer - Tanga

The Tanzania Forest Conservation Group (TFCG) is a non-governmental organisation promoting the conservation of high biodiversity forests in Tanzania. TFCG welcomes applications from qualified women and men for two positions.



TFCG operates a participatory forest management programme in the Eastern Arc Mountains of Tanzania. This includes the East Usambara Forest Landscape Restoration Project (Muheza and Mkinga Districts). TFCG are implementing this project in partnership with the WWF Tanzania Programme Office and Muheza District Council. TFCG is looking for a dynamic and experienced person to join the projectteam.



Essential Qualifications

Bachelors degree in forestry, natural resource management or other relevant discipline;

At least 3 years work experience in the fields of participatory natural resources management; Experience of working with NGOs and local communities;

The post holder must have a good understanding of conservation issues, excellent communication skills and be familiar with various computer software packages.

Fluency in written and spoken English and Swahili is essential and a good knowledge of the project area is an added advantage.



Duties

The Project Officer will be responsible for the implementation of project activities including facilitating local communities and other stakeholders to implement planned interventions towards forest restoration; promoting tree planting; providing training on forest conservation and income generating activities to local communities; and preparing detailed reports on project activities. ICRAF Vietnam program focuses on climate change adaptation and mitigation through agroforestry and also supports multi-functional landscapes with trees for environmental services.   The senior scientist will during 2010-2011conduct research and gradually take up the leadership of ICRAF Vietnam program in October, 2011. The senior scientist will be based in the region and will undertake the following duties and responsibilities:
 
Research tasks: Participate in designing research activities, provide back up to national partners involved, synthesize findings, understanding of policy processes, sharing and managing information, raising public awareness, and fundraising for research in Climate Change and Environmental Services in Vietnam. Specific activities are:
  1. Together with the country coordinator, the scientist will provide technical coordination of fieldwork of the on-going projects on rewarding  upland people for environmental  services, reducing emission from deforestation and degradation (REDD), and reducing emission from any landuse (REALU).  The tasks include developing research design, research team building and providing back up and research inputs to partners and collaborators.  The senior scientist will participate in research as the principle investigator in the Bac Kan, Bach Ma National park and Dak Nong/Dak Lak research and take the lead in report writings.
  2. Contribute to producing scientific publications and other publication materials on the topics of REDD, environmental Services, in line with ICRAF’s work on climate change and environmental services, and assist both the Country Coordinator and the Southeast Asia Coordinator in peer reviews, policy brief publications, and synthesis publications that cover the region.
  3. Lead and support the exploring of new funding opportunities for Vietnam and Southeast Asia (SEA) region in the field of Environmental Services, REDD, and REALU. The work would involve the strategic development of concept notes, work plan, fund raising and proposal development with other staff in SEA.
  4. Link Climate Change and Environment Services research activities in Vietnam with those in SEA and globally: the scientist will work closely with regional and global teams on planning and implementation of ICRAF’s Medium Term Plan(3 yearly planning) and reporting Vietnam activities to ICRAF SEA Regional Office and to Global Project Leaders.
Coordination task:
  1. Assist the ICRAF country coordinator and the SEA Regional Coordinator in the research strategy development and implementation, partnership building and management activities (including budget); research and survey design and oversight; and recruiting and managing consultancies.
  2. By October 2011, assume full responsibility for the ICRAF Vietnam program by taking the role first as ICRAF Country Deputy Coordinator.
 
Requirements  
  1. PhD in Forestry, Ecology, Environment Services, Political sciences, Geography or closely related fields.
  2. A minimum of five years post-PhD research and outreach experience in development issues.

The World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) is recruiting for the positions of Tree Scientist, to be based at its headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya. The position will report directly to the Regional Representative and the Global Research Priority 1 Leader.   
The role will be to devise and apply appropriate techniques and strategies for the domestication of tree species in a smallholder farm setting, with an emphasis on indigenous fruits and nuts. His/her responsibilities will include: 
  1. Conceptualise and implement research for the domestication of tree species for small-scale farmers in the tropics
  2. In linkage with pilot development activities, describe and apply tools and strategies for measuring the impact of tree domestication research, in order to promote maximum impact under a range of different challenges to production
  3. Optimise strategies for genetic selection and gain in the improvement of prioritised agroforestry tree species, to ensure utilisation of the best approaches
  4. Develop cutting edge technologies to link advances in tree propagation with genetic improvement
  5. Develop further work through writing/contributing to project proposals on tree domestication
  6. Develop and nurture collaborations with national, regional and international research centres to facilitate collaborative studies and the dissemination of research findings
  7. Collaborate with and influence extension programs in the provision and exchange of suitably packaged information and technologies that advocate the use of best practices in tree domestication and in the provision of tree seed and seedlings to farmers
  8. Supervise and guide postgraduate students, young post-doctoral scientists and other staff involved in tree domestication activities
  9. Liaise with ICRAF staff and collaborators across geographic region
 
Requirements  
  1. PhD in Tree Science with experience in agroforestry, horticulture, Agriculture and or forestry 
  2. Five years work in tropical countries in field research, project development and management, and data interpretation and presentation
  3. Practiced in one or more of the following: the development of propagation techniques; tree physiology research; tree genetics and breeding; the development of circa situ (on farm) strategies for biodiversity conservation
  4. Experience in collaborating with social scientists and post-harvest processing/marketing specialists in the development of integrated tree domestication strategies for livelihood improvement

Reporting to the Hospitality Supervisor, the overall responsibility will be to provide hostel services to ensure comfort of visitors at the Institute.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Ensure hostels and linen are clean
  • Facilitate procurement/supply of items for use in the hostels and maintaining up to date records
  • Ensure checking in and departure of visitors is property handled
  • Ensure security of property in hostels
  • Prepare reports
  • Perform any other duties that may be assigned from time to time
